Moon Core

Moon Core

installation with videos, wall drawing, photographs, eggshells and Moon Core Simulants, 2018

The Moon Core installation incorporats objects and data from Meyer-Brandis’s moon goose research with moon core simulants. Produced on Earth with the identical chemical composition as those found on the Moon, she questions when fiction becomes reality. Core samples are obtained by drilling down into a substance and extracting a cylindrical sample for examination. The study of stone, earth or ice cores allows us to travel back in time. In this case it means travelling in time and space to delve into the history of the Moon in search of a link to the moon geese.

With the help of geologists and impact researchers, the artist follows the logical assumption that although the geese are not present anymore on the moon their remnants - such as droppings and eggs - must be. If we can’t find eggs, where did they go? Disintegrated over hundreds of years, would they show up in chemical analysis of the geological strata of the Moon? This installation presents the documentation and materials of the research, including moon goose eggshells which have been mechanically weathered to simulate lunar conditions.
